10 August 2020
The new reopening date for UK land based casinos has now been set for the 15th August 2020.
This new date has been set by the Government after it's U-turn on the previous announcement that was promising an ealier reopening. The postponement has upset the BGC – Betting and Gaming Council that also says the cost for preparing the reopening is around £6 million pounds, while 6,000 jobs in the casino sector could be at risk as the future is dangerously uncertain.
After many months of lockdown the casino sector has not only lost millions of pound of revenue each month but it’s also costing the Treasury nearly £2m a week in furlough funds and a similar amount in lost gaming taxes. Should the Government postpone once more the reopening of UK casinos, that would be not only harmful for the majority of operators that truly wish this will not happen but deadly challenging for many. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
